Surviving off hook-up 11b9fe c f c7f-c3d14f d5 One of the great advantages of owning a motorhome is the ability to roam and not be tied down to a campsite every night. It becomes a number-juggling process as you balance the available electric and gas capacity against the need to cook, heat, light, refrigerate your food and power the water pump. There are certain preparations that can be taken before setting out, that will maximise the amount of time you can spend away from the electric nectar of the mains supply. The first consideration is understanding how your leisure battery works — which provides the power when the engine is off. A typical leisure battery is rated at Ah, which means that if you draw 5A every hour from it thanks to your various electrical devices, it will last 20 hours before going from fully charged to flat. One way to extend the amount of power you have available is to add a second leisure battery but there are ways of doing that are efficient than others. The first is to wire them to work in parallel so that they share the workload, rather than serially, where the supplied current would be double what your devices are expecting. It will help if both batteries are the same power rating and, if possible, they are both the same age.

Share on Facebook Charging a battery can help extend the battery’s life and potentially save you money. During the process of charging the battery, you may accidentally mix up the cables and put the wrong one on the incorrect terminal. When this happens, it could damage the battery as well as other associated electrical components.

There are two main ways you can power electrical devices on the campsite. The first is to use a leisure battery, which is like a car battery and provides a 12V supply, and the second is an electric hook-up, which provides a V supply as you would find at home. To find more about charging leisure batteries see our Battery Charging Data Sheet. Your own power pack A leisure battery is a great way to provide electricity when you are away from a mains connection.
You can use it to power a range of 12V devices, from lights to toilet flushes and from televisions to caravan movers. However, the appliances must be designed to run on a 12V supply. Most caravans, motorhomes and folding campers will have a leisure battery installed. Hooking up to the mains Most commercial and Club campsites will offer electric hook-ups on some or all of their pitches.
These provide a V supply, which can power most of the appliances you might use at home. Tripping the electrical supply can make you unpopular on site. The least you will need to do is contact the site manager to ask him to reset the system. Electricity can be dangerous, especially in the damp conditions of a tent or in the open air. Even a 12V battery can give you a nasty shock if used incorrectly. Used in the right way however, campers can benefit from mains electricity and, if they take the right precautions, they can do it safely.

The rebuild never seems to last and some of the areas like leaking around linkage and dry gaskets are often not fixable. They are too complicated, too hard to adjust, and in a difficult place to work on. I have a new engine, is the old carb still correct for the heavy breather? With a closed loop control, this should be adjusted automatically. I think basically, I hate carburetors. These are the parts to be added.
Description. With a new easy-up structure that assembles in seconds, this large storage unit can be used as a wardrobe, kitchen or other storage.
Mains Hook-up Cable Considerations. The quality and condition of the mains EHU affects how things work in the vehicle. This EHU lead was from my own van, everything worked fine except the Water never got Hot on v, it got warm, so the element was clearly working, just never got above tepid. On Gas the water heated up to full temperature.
The charger ran the lights and charged the battery, the Television worked perfectly on v and our Volt Meter inside the van showed v at the 13amp sockets. I cut the cable back to sound Copper and fitted a new Blue Socket and the Water Heater worked perfectly. I can only guess that the contact inside the connector was just good enough to supply everything, except the high current of the Water Heater?
That shows the type of impact the EHU cable can have.

First, we had to decide what we wanted from our solar installation. In the summer, having stopped somewhere for more than days with no electric hook-up , it would be ideal if the output from the solar panels balanced the load on the leisure battery. We found one can fit a solar power installation relatively inexpensively by sourcing items on Ebay directly from China and elsewhere.
76 thoughts on “ How Much Can You Tow with a Small Motorhome? ~Arion July 24, at pm. Please do make a video!! Having always wondered about how to weigh my rig I latched onto your comment about “CAT scale”.
First and foremost, towing in this way can be expensive in the initial outlay of money. Here are the items you need to tow a vehicle behind your rig: Towbar Towbar brackets installed on the front of the towed car Wiring for the towed car or magnetic lights Hitch and wiring on tow vehicle or motorhome Braking System for towed car Optional: Steel and stainless steel at every critical point ensure superior strength and structural integrity.
That’s more than enough muscle to tow Suburbans, Hummers, Excursions and full-size pickups. The Freedom Latch releases the tow bar at any angle, level or bind the first time, every time. Disconnects and Lube Pumps All of this equipment assumes that your towed car is set up for towing. What do I mean by that? When you tow a car, the car is not running, right?
Well if the car is moving, the transmission is turning, but if the car is moving while it is not running, there is no transmission fluid lubricating the parts. Guess what this will do to your transmission?
Please be guided accordingly. This article was first drafted in , but after review is absolutely as “current” today as it was when first written. It is likely the most comprehensive review of pre-delivery inspections for taking delivery of any RV, whether new or used, and whether from the factory, a dealer, or through private sale. I realize that most factories put some miles on each coach during the quality control activity, but I want to drive the rest.
This is the ideal way to make hooking up your towed vehicle a snap. I use it on a class A motorhome towing a Jeep Wrangler. The coiled cord keeps everything neat and the included “sockets” keep the contacts nice and clean, protected from the weather.

Back in I went to work at the start-up of the Humber Oil Refinery. The Blender Control Room had a huge long panel with maybe a thousand or more switches, lights, recorders, indicators etc etc and I knew every one – except for one small push-button on the bottom right hand corner that was unmarked! I enquired what it was for and was told “Read the Manual. It just didn’t seem right and over the next six months or so I would press the button every so often to see what would happen; and nothing did!
Sometime in the middle of an electrician called Harry had finished a job early and was sat having a smoke in the Mess Room next to the Blender Control Room. I said to Harry “If you’ve got a few minutes to spare, could you please check out what the hell this unmarked button does? The push-button was a “Remote Start” for the Emergency Generator located nearly half a mile away; and Conoco had been refusing to pay for it on the basis that it kept starting “at random intervals and for no apparent reason”!
No-one knew who had authorised or installed the push-button; and I have never trusted things electrical ever since!

Print Email We’re now nearly three months into our third trip and one of the recurring problems from the previous tours is the matter of drying hair. Sophie, who has lovely long blonde hair, hates not being able to blow dry it properly. We tried all manor of 12v hair dryers which varied from pathetic to down right dangerous with melting wires and popping fuses.
Adam & Sophie’s European travels through over 20 countries in their motorhome. Blog, information & guide about camper van travel and life on the road.
The inexpensive plug-in mains tester indicates any fault in the campsite mains supply, such as reverse polarity, or missing earth, and can also be used to test all the other socket outlets in the van. In our simple 12volt installation, the van and leisure batteries are kept entirely separate; the van starter battery cannot be used to power the fridge or any other 12volt item installed. In this instance we assume the solar panels are not producing a useable output.
There are alternatives to having a bank of switches, meters and lights mounted separately on a panel in this fashion. A look at Pro-converters vans will show what is available – although some systems will be expensive and may be difficult for a self-builder to obtain and install. We like the simplicity of discrete items – if anything fails we can easily find and isolate the problem. Complex systems which combine services with displays and touch screens, that include power supplies, charging, fusing, etc.
This is a clever, if expensive, item but then it was developed for the marine environment so should be reliable. Simply, on start-up the charger monitors the voltage of the van starter battery; if there is insufficient voltage present, then the charger will just continue to monitor, but not try to charge the leisure batteries. If the van battery is near fully charged or once it has been charged sufficiently by the van alternator , the B2B charger will switch on and, if necessary, fast-charge the leisure batteries.

What is a Switch Pitch Transmission? How does a Torque Converter work? Torque converters are a tricky thing to discuss because they are one of those concepts like a differential gearset- once understood its never forgotten, but until you have grasped the basic principles of it, its hard to imagine what makes it work. Theres been some excellent replies.
Before I get into theory I’ll touch on the basic stuff- GMC’s came originally with a converter with a fixed stall speed of circa rpm or thereabouts. This is typical of heavy duty transmissions in trucks and in performance cars, but quite a lot higher stall than the average sixties or seventies full size passenger car might have used.
There is no better feeling then hitting the open road and finding somewhere to pitch up in the motorhome. Hook Farm is very accommodating to the diverse range of touring vehicles, from 7m RV’s to bikers with saddle bags.
Farewell to Microsoft Autoroute – Discontinued in If you are familiar with our blog, you’ll know Microsoft Autoroute features heavily in our route planning and navigation. Last year I spent the best part of a day compiling and formatting a data set in Microsoft Excel for use with Autoroute. Over , lines of information were formatted as hyperlinks to take you direct to where the information was displayed online from several sources.
It has been downloaded more than 10, times – so at least I know I’m not alone. If you were one of them – please complete the poll at the bottom of this blog post and let me know if you’d download a version. However on the 31st December you will no longer be able to buy Microsoft Autoroute via the online Microsoft Store. It also seems that all of the CD copies have dried up too and so if you want it you need to act fast, buy online and once downloaded ensure you backup the installation files as I’m not sure you’ll be able to access them again.
The feedback and enthusiasm from our users have helped make Microsoft travel planning software a leading solution for nearly twenty years. The retirement of these products will not affect software already installed. If it was purely navigation you are after then I concede that there are better devices or software available to perform that task. However if you want to handle a lot of POI Point of Interest data from several sources in a single screen and have full control over those data sets there isn’t really a piece of software which can deliver this in the same way.
I’ve always said that a ‘Sat Nav’ is great at telling you where you are going – but not so great at telling you where you are in relation to points of interest and I don’t like the way in which high volume data is formatted and displayed on these devices. In addition, how many times has your TomTom or Garmin deviated you off a main road just to ‘cut off a corner’? Having a secondary map view means we have been able to avoid this.
